A foray into a wasteland of sound and space, somewhere between Ludwig Göransson and Ennio Morricone. Göransson has scored many of Ryan Coogler’s films, Tenet and Odyssey for Christopher Nolan, and all the Mandalorian we’ve seen on TV and the big screen. Morricone needs less introduction — most Americans know him from the spaghetti westerns, especially The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
I’ve loved the music in The Mandalorian, that western-ish openness. You can almost hear the air of the desert in it, and that’s exactly what I tried to capture here. The strummed dulcimer’s jangly sound pulls straight from Morricone and the westerns he scored in the ’50s and ’60s.
This piece is gentler and less jarring than those old scores, there’s no drama or conflict yet to jar you with. Just the air.
Instrumentation: Clarinet, Recorder, PVC Digeridoo, Strummed Dulcimer, Piano & Melodica
(Working title was “Dulcimer Jam” — I’m terrible at naming things on the spot when I’m not yet invested in a piece. But you have to name it to save it.)
The visuals are AI-generated (Gemini) — barren wastelands on a foreign planet, echoing the Göransson side of this; the jangly dulcimer is all Morricone.
