Matthew Ulm has never fit into any boxes and stopped trying a long time ago. At the center of most things he makes is Penelope, his primary bass guitar, whom he has been making music with for 30+ years at this point. It is THE instrument he has spent learning to speak through.
As a performing bassist, he has shared the stage with Marcus Belgrave, Frank Dawson, and Thomas Gunther, and many others. He also spent many years “under the stage”, supporting musicals in the vibrant Chicago musical theater world.
His solo work, released under his name, is genuinely hard to categorize and that’s the point. Drawing from jazz, funk, orchestral, electronic, and everything in between, each release follows its curiosity rather than a formula. What ties it all together is the low end: deep, intentional, and alive.
The quieter years of 2020 cracked something open creatively, and the music that has followed has been some of his most personal.
This is the Second single from an upcoming studio album I will be releasing towards the start of Fall 2026.
This song is from the ending credits of the first Independent Film opportunity I had. I met the screenwriter originally, and then things just spiraled out from there.
The film is still in post production so no link to share just yet, but I look forward to everyone checking it out.

Originally my daughter and her friend just wanted to “play” in daddy’s office, and make some music. This was at the earliest stages of building my home studio space.
The Ableton project sat there for about a year , and when I was going through old stuff I decided to open this up.
Just what had the kids done in my office.
From there, as you will hear, I cut and spliced my way to a song with some bass overdubs. OK, a lot of bass overdubs.
I first release this song to Soundcloud in 2024, but it was without the vocals. My daughter did not want her vocals at the time. This is the fully restored release with her permission.
Music without a Film
This album is more cinematic, and leans into the film scoring work that I have always wanted to do. Some of these are more for fun than others. Some were very much experiments with the new Home Studio. This experiment is ongoing.
