Matthew Ulm is a Chicago-based composer, sound designer, and audio architect whose work spans two decades of theatrical and cinematic storytelling.  A graduate of Columbia College Chicago, he studied composition and bass under Doug Lofstrom and deepened his craft studying with Frank Dawson and Joe Cerqua. Matt’s screen credits include composing for the 2026 short film Witnesses, and his theatrical sound design work have been heard at Chicago Dramatists, The Understudy, and the Chopin Theatre with acclaimed companies including Congo Square Theatre and Underscore Theatre Company.

As a performing bassist, he has shared the stage with Marcus Belgrave, Frank Dawson, and Thomas Gunther.  Working entirely in house, from initial concept through the final mix,  Matt builds custom sonic architectures that serve the story first.


His philosophy says it simply:

“My role is to serve the story.”
