Upcycling a Christmas tree as coop bedding is a clever way to provide extra insulation and enrichment for a flock. Pine and fir needles are naturally absorbent and can help manage odors in the coop, while the branches create great perching spots and “boredom busters” for chickens to peck at when they are spending more time indoors to stay warm.
Here are a few additional tips for using evergreens safely:
- Check for Additives: Ensure the tree was not treated with chemical flame retardants or artificial “flock” (fake snow), as these can be toxic if ingested by the birds.
- Remove Hardware: Double-check for any missed ornament hooks, tinsel, or staples that could cause injury.
- Drying and Airflow: If the branches are still very damp from being outside, let them dry slightly before packing them into the coop to prevent excess moisture buildup, which can lead to frostbite in high-humidity conditions.
- Composting: Once the needles have dropped and the “bedding” phase is over, the remaining woody branches make excellent carbon material for a compost pile or can be used as a base for a new brush pile to protect wild birds from predators.
