I was the designated driver this weekend for the kids sporting events, so we packed up the car and drove to the very near south suburbs for some all day volleyball.
The tournament was great, and the Wintrust sports complex is pretty good but the fact it needs video games and laser tag is also bit weird to me. The part I really want to write about is this…..
A bottle of soda was $5. Not a 20 Oz one, but the smaller 14 Oz bottles. What struck me was the number of people who would audibly complain about the price, sometimes quite loudly, but they would pull out the card or bill and buy it anyway. The water fountain is on the opposite wall of the soda machines.
This was a fairly good cross section of Illinois as well. Teams from Rockford (middle of Illinois), southern Wisconsin, Yorkville, Starved rock. Basically not just the city folk. My reason for saying this is when comparing these locations with the most recent election results, we have lots of red and blue folks at these events. All in all, I saw only 10 people who brought their own lunch instead of buying it, and barely anyone drank water that I could see.
We complain about high prices but we pay them don’t we. All of us. I might not have bought a soda, but I am sure anyone can point out something really stupid I wasted money on. The point being the oligarchs will continue to push inflation higher until we finally just stop consuming stupid crap. We stop giving into that quick inner urge, and just let it go.
